Souls is one of Bangladesh’s pioneering bands, with roots in Chattogram in 1972. Originally known as Shurela, the group adopted the name Souls in 1973 and helped shape the country’s band-music tradition.[1]
Starting with Western covers and developing an original Bangla repertoire, Souls built a sound that brings rock, pop and Bengali musical influences together. Its story has included influential musicians such as Tapan Chowdhury, Naquib Khan and Ayub Bachchu, each part of a wider legacy that reaches well beyond a single lineup.[2]
Albums such as Super Souls, E Emon Porichoy and Mukhorito Jibon reflect the breadth of that catalogue. Songs including “Mon Shudhu Mon Chuyeche,” “College Er Corridorey” and “Keno Ei Nisshongota” remain part of the band’s musical story.[2]
Partha Barua, who joined Souls in 1989, is the band’s vocalist and lead guitarist. His long association with the group connects its established sound with an ongoing creative journey.[3] The band’s anniversary performances have also brought musicians from different eras together to celebrate that shared history.[4]
